Amyris is a tree species native to Haiti and is often referred to as West Indies Sandalwood. The tree can grow up to 40 feet tall and has a broad crown with dark green leaves and white flowers. The essential oil of Amyris is extracted from the wood of the tree, which is known for its sandalwood-like aroma.
Amyris essential oil is produced only from naturally fallen trees, which are collected and then dried before being steam distilled to produce an essential oil with a creamy, buttery smooth scent. The oil has a vanilla-sweet balsamic woodiness that makes it similar to East Indian sandalwood. However, Amyris is from the botanical family Rutaceae, not Santalaceae or the genus Santalum, which means that it is not a genuine sandalwood. Although Amyris essential oil shares several aromas similar to sandalwood, it is not a substitute and acts as a cost-effective alternative in blends because, on its own, it does not possess the intricate aromatic notes of authentic Sandalwood.
In perfumery, Amyris is considered an aphrodisiac because of its calming and sensuous effect. Amyris essential oil is perfect for meditation and making incense due to its low cost and high aromatic value. The oil is often used as a base note in perfumes and can blend well with other oils such as bergamot, lavender, and citrus oils.
Amyris essential oil has several benefits, including its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. The oil can be used in massage oils, bath salts, and diffusers to create a calming and soothing atmosphere.
